Fun & Free Ways to Beat the Heat With Kids This Summer

So it’s summertime, and you want to entertain your kids in ways that don’t include plopping them in front of a screen, paying a hefty price, or burning up in the summer sun. I’ve got you covered. Here are a few free activities to enjoy this summer that will keep you cool and have the added benefit of being free!

1. Visit/Rent From Your Local Library

Your local library is an incredible free resource for your family! Of course, there’s the ability to borrow books, but most libraries also have a ton of child-centered activities for your little ones to participate in such as story time for toddlers, more advanced curriculum for older kids, and age appropriate play options.

Additionally, most libraries allow you to borrow more than just books. Some even offer cool items to borrow like a telescope! This is a great way to utilize free community resources to create fun memories for your little ones. Support your local library by obtaining a library card and utilizing its resources.

2. Attend Home Depot’s Children’s Workshops

Did you know that Home Depot hosts free children’s workshops on the first Saturday of each month? All materials are free and they even provide a complimentary child-sized Home Depot apron and pin!

These workshops are held at 9am and get crowded quickly so be sure to register for your local workshop ASAP online at https://www.homedepot.com/c/kids-workshop to reserve your spot and materials.

3. Visit the Animals at PetSmart/PetCo

This one speaks for itself – peruse the aisles of your local pet store with your littles ones. This activity is always a huge hit with our 3 and 4-year olds. They love looking at the different species of fish, snakes, birds, cats, etc. It’s like a small-scale zoo where you can get close and personal without having to pay $20+ per person and with the comfort of air conditioning.

4. Visit Your Indoor Mall Playground

Check your local mall(s) for indoor playgrounds! Our favorite mall has an incredibe small child-friendly indoor playground that we love. Most outdoor playgrounds are meant for children ages 5 and older, however, the indoor ones found at many malls are designed with small children and their capabilities in mind.

We like to get there early and get some work down while our children play. Most malls open their doors early for “mall walkers” which mostly comprise of senior citizens in the community. The mall is a great place for them to get their steps in, as its safe and free from traffic, cool, and near plenty of benches and restrooms. Coincidentally, all also great benefits for parents of small children!

5. Go to a Splash Pad

This is a very obvious and popular activity in the summer-time and, living in Utah, we have some pretty incredible splash pads nearby. Not only will this keep you and your kiddos cool during the summer months, but they have so much fun and there’s also the added benefit of socializing with other children and parents. It’s free and a great way to get outdoors, but beat the heat.

These have been a few of our favorite go-to activities when we’re trying to remain within budget, but also have some summer-fun. What are some of your favorite free things to do with your little ones in the summertime?
