One day I’ll own a home… But, for now, I’m enjoying a 3-bedroom apartment with a 4th-floor balcony. As a Mom of 3 young children, I am eagerly anticipating the day in which I can give my kids a large, spacious backyard to roam and call their own. However, in the meantime, we are making the most of apartment living and all that comes with it.

In the summer months, especially during weekdays when my husband and I are working remotely, keeping our kids occupied in a stimulating way that doesn’t involve a screen can be challenging. I would obviously prefer that they spend more time outdoors, however, we can’t always make it to the park. Certainly not during work hours. This is when a personal backyard space would reallyyyy come in handy.

It’s times like this, though, when creative juices start to flow and we, as parents, adjust and maximize our resources. Such is the reality of apartment living as a family of 5. To encourage my little ones to be outside more (even if just on our balcony), I put together a simple, affordable sandbox for their enjoyment.

Using a cheap, shallow plastic kiddie pool (this pool including an umbrella for sun protection is another great option) and some play sand (I used one entire 50 pound bag), I was able to fashion our very own little sandbox right outside our door. It’s situated on our balcony, not even occupying a full third of its length.

This sandbox has become a real hit with my 3 and 4 year old, who play in it virtually every day. I picked up a few beach toys (also incredibly affordable) and let them have at it.

Our little DIY sandbox holds their attention for hours. It has truly been a game changer in their sensory and outdoor play.

This summer, I plan to add a water table to the mix to really encourage outdoor play, despite our limited outdoor space. So, take this as your sign if you haven’t made it out of an apartment yet (or perhaps don’t plan to) — maximize the space you do have.

Let me know if you try this out and what creative and functional activities you’ve implemented living in an apartment with kids!
